History

Thermal energy processes accompany the entire development of man and therefore stood at the establishment of higher education in Liberec in 1953. In the introduction we can mention those who no longer live, but have greatly contributed to the emergence and development of teaching and research in thermal and hydraulic equipment: Prof. Ing. Dr. Josef Kožoušek in the field of internal combustion engines, from 1953 to 1961 rector of VŠS; Prof. Ing. František Kámen in the field of operating technology and boilers, from 1960 to 1963 vice-dean of TF; Prof. Ing. Jiří Mayer, heat turbine from 1957 to 1960 vice-rector, later dean of SF and rector; Prof. Ing. Dr. Karel Sýkora in the field of heat and mass transfer, vice-rector of VŠST from 1966 to 1969; Doc. Ing. Svatopluk Nemecek, CSc. in the field of hydromechanics and hydraulic blade machines, from 1954 to 1957 vice-rector; Prof. Ing. Jiří Kratochvíl, CSc. in the field of gas dynamics and jet engines, from 1965 to 1966 Vice-Dean of SF.

Historical development of the field

The teaching of subject subjects, provided by the current Department of Power Equipment, was started in the school year 1956 - 1957 with the subject Hydromechanics. In the following years, teaching was gradually started in the field of heat turbines and steam engines (Prof. Mayer), steam boilers (Prof. Kámen), compressors and cooling (Prof. Mayer), thermomechanics and thermal engineering (Prof. Sýkora).

Department of Thermal Engineering

Supervisor:

 Prof. Ing. Jiří Mayer (October 1, 1958 - September 1, 1976).

In addition to teaching in its field, the Department of Thermal Engineering was involved in the organization of postgraduate studies in the field of computer technology and in the construction of the Automation Center, which was equipped with a MINSK 22 computer (Ing. Sláma, Ing. Bremec). After its completion, the Department of Automation, Regulation and Computer Science (Prof. Ing. Bořivoj Hanuš, DrSc.) Took over the teaching, including the teaching of control and automation. The department also participated in the creation of a study center for program forms of teaching, equipped with examination machines - EXAS. This center was used by a number of departments of the university for teaching and control of the teaching process. The first examination programs in hydromechanics, thermomechanics and thermal engineering were created. Since 1970, the Department of Thermomechanics and Technical Measurement has been incorporated into the Department of Thermal Engineering.

Department of Thermomechanics and Technical Measurement

Supervisor:

 Prof. Ing. Dr. Karel Sýkora (November 1, 1960 - September 29, 1969)

 Prof. Ing. Václav Hynčica, CSc. (October 1, 1969 - June 30, 1970)

The Department of Thermomechanics was part of the Department of Technical Mechanics as well as the Department of Elasticity and Strength, the Department of Technical Mechanics and the Department of Hydraulic Machines and Hydromechanics. In 1964, some institutes became independent and the Department of Flexibility and Strength was also established. The Laboratory of Power Machines is being built (medium-pressure turbocharger with aftercooler, fan line, Zeiss 80 centrifugal device, wing blower, pressure vessels, vacuum pumps). In 1963, the Department of Radioisotope Methods was accredited at the department and the foundations of future education in the field of creation and environmental protection were being formed. Research and development work in the field of thermal engineering and aerodynamics is focused on North Bohemian energy, automotive industry (LIAZ), glass, textile and food industries. The development of the evaporator and the use of heat pumps in the glass industry (Prof. Sýkora) were particularly significant. Cooperation is established with the Technical University of Dresden (Prof. Kratochvíl) and within the international research program, research into the cooling of electrical machines rotating up to 1000 KW (Doc. Unger) was carried out. The Laboratory of Hydrodynamic Analogy and Flow Visualization and the Laboratory of Thermoanemometry are being built.

Department of Thermomechanics

Supervisor:

 Prof. Ing. Václav Hynčica, CSc. (May 15, 1990 - September 30, 1991)

 Prof. Ing. Josef Olehla, CSc. (September 30, 1991 - May 31, 2000)

The department is established by a department from the Department of Power Equipment, it co-founds a new study focus on "thermal engineering" within the field of "construction of machines and equipment". New laboratories of thermodynamics and heat sharing are being built, focusing mainly on air conditioning, drying and renewable energy sources. Extensive cooperation is established with related workplaces in Germany and Spain (Prof. Olehla).

Department of Hydromechanics and Hydraulic Mechanisms

Supervisor:

 Doc. Ing. Svatopluk Němeček, CSc (December 1, 1966 - February 17, 1971).

A laboratory of hydraulic machines with three pump-turbine circuits, a water channel and an underground pool has been built. The research is mainly focused on the field of cavitation processes (Cavitation Laboratory). Research work is partly directed to nuclear energy.

Supervisor:

 Prof. Ing. Jaroslav Simon, CSc. (February 18, 1971 - June 1, 1974).

Research and teaching in the field were gradually reduced, the department was weakened in terms of personnel, and the laboratories were completely demolished and liquidated.

Department of Thermal and Hydraulic Equipment

Supervisor:

 Prof. Ing. Jiří Mayer (September 1, 1976 - August 1, 1979).

The department takes over the teaching of hydromechanics and part of the research of the defunct Department of Hydromechanics and Hydraulic Mechanisms. In the field of science and education, it develops cooperation with the Moscow Textile Institute and TH Karl-Marx Stadt.

Department of Power Equipment

Supervisor:

 Prof. Ing. Jiří Mayer (August 1, 1979 - October 30, 1980)
 Prof. Ing. Jiří Šinták, CSc (November 1, 1980 - September 1, 1986)
 Doc. Ing. Josef Patočka, CSc. (September 1, 1986 - May 14, 1990)

Within the established four-year study, the department teaches only the subjects "Theoretical Foundations of Power Equipment I. and II.", In the 2nd and 3rd year of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Textiles, and the subject "Environmental Protection". In the field of research, the department is focused on the state target program "Rationalization of consumption and use of fuels and energy" (Doc. Patočka, Prof. Mayer, Doc.
